A wooden cutting board is one of the most widely used kitchenware items. We recommend conditioning your cutting board once a month or more often if your board(s) shows dryness or fading.
HAND WASH ONLY
To help avoid bacteria, it’s important that you wash your cutting board immediately after use. Wipe the cutting board with hot soapy water. Rinse your board with hot water, then just wipe it dry with a clean dish towel. Always allow your board to dry fully before storing. Always store in a dry area.
- Never submerge your board in water
- Do not place your board in a dishwasher or microwave
(Organic) CLEAN WITH COARSE SALT & LEMON
For an all-natural clean, first try dampening the wooden cutting board with a warm cloth and sprinkling coarse salt over it. Cut a lemon in half and scour the cut side of the lemon over the board while slightly squeezing the lemon juice out. Let it stand for five minutes and use a quality dish-washing brush to remove the excess.
DISINFECT & DEODORIZE
Although Hardwood Boards have natural antibacterial properties, there are additional steps you can take, if you prefer. Keeping white vinegar in a spray bottle is something some customers choose to do. Spray the vinegar on your cutting board, let sit for a few minutes and simply wipe it with a damp warm cloth.
REMOVING STAINS & DEODORIZING WITH BAKING SODA
Combine 2 tablespoons of baking soda, 1 tablespoon of salt and 3 tablespoons hot water to create a non-toxic cleaning agent. Mix these ingredients together and scrub the entire surface of the cutting board. Finally, wipe it with a warm wet cloth and dry with a dish towel.
It’s important to make sure your cutting board is clean and dry before applying either Standard or Organic conditioning methods.

(Partially Organic) BEESWAX AND MINERAL OIL COMBO
You can mix food-grade mineral oil and beeswax in order to combine the penetrating qualities of mineral oil, with the sealing qualities of beeswax. This is a popular partially organic method.
- In a small saucepan, measure 1/4 cup of beeswax (chunked for quicker melting) and 1 cup of mineral oil. Stir constantly on low heat until the beeswax is completely If temperature is too high, the beeswax will discolor.
- Remove from heat and let stand for a minute, then pour in a sealed jar and let cool for a few hours, stirring once or twice every hour to ensure it is well blended. If you skip the stirring, the mixture won’t be as
- Using a small cloth, rub the paste on board until absorbed and let it stand for 5-15 With a clean cotton cloth, buff in a circular motion until the finish is smooth.
(Non-Organic) MINERAL OIL
Food Grade Mineral Oil has been one of the most commonly used options. It is a safe and cost effective way to keep your wooden cutting boards looking good.
(Avoid using any vegetable, olive or nut-based oils on your cutting boards for the simple reason most will spoil and become rancid.)
REFURBISHING WOODEN CUTTING BOARDS
Knife marks will accumulate on your cutting board over time. Another wonderful fact about a wooden board is that it can be "refinished". Simply sand the board with 100 grit, then 180 grit and finally with 240 grit sandpaper. After sanding, wash the board with our Chef or Chefette Soap, rinse, then let dry. Once fully dry, apply Sunflowees Old Fashioned Cutting Board Seasoning.
